Broker predicts ethanol to fuel demand for corn (genetics news)

...Farmers have been increasing their harvest by about 2.5 bushels an acre each year, and he predicts that will continue.

Farmers harvested 11.1 billion bushels of corn last year, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service.

That came close to matching the record 11.8 billion bushels of corn harvested a year earlier.

Even with this massive supply, farmers may have trouble growing enough corn to meet demand for ethanol production and livestock feed in the coming decade, Tucker said.

Corn supplies could become tight, and that would push up prices, he said.

Corn prices averaged $1.90 a bushel last fall, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service.

The price has reached $5 a bushel in the past and could skyrocket to high levels again, Tucker said.

“We’re definitely building a situation in corn where if we have a tight year, the market will be very explosive,” he said.

Soybean demand is not expected to reach the same peak, Tucker said.

The South American climate allows soybean farms there to compete head-on with American farmers in the world market.

Also, Tucker said soybean yields are likely to remain flat in the next 10 years.

“It’s hard to be overly optimistic about bean growth,” he said.

Still, most grain farmers will continue to grow both soybeans and corn.
