GET A MOVE ON AT GRANDMA'S (genetics news)

...They joined the new Kids Shape-Up Class at the DeLand Family YMCA.

"Now, instead of sitting at home watching cartoons, we're here at the Y," said Giaimo of DeLand.

Parents are welcome to work out alongside their children in the Kids Shape-Up class.

The running, jumping, stretching, circuit training and weight training are working for both mother and daughter.

Cayla's jeans are getting so loose that she has accused her mother of wearing them and stretching them out.

Giaimo may not fit in her daughter's jeans yet, but she is pleased with results since they have started the class.

"I know I'll never be skinny-skinny," Giaimo says, laughing, "but it's nice to see everything not jiggling." The Giaimos are far from alone in fighting fat.

Obesity is a serious health issue for children.

The rate of obesity in the United States has more than doubled for preschoolers and adolescents, and it has more than tripled for children ages 6 to 11 during the past 30 years, according to MayoClinic.com.

Diane Allen, a registered dietitian at Halifax Medical Center, attributes the childhood obesity trend to several factors.

Head cased: from the unusual to the abnormal (genetics news)

...Watson speculates that continued advances may bring a day when psychologists and others will be able to identify genetic markers predisposing people to certain mental disorders.

"If that happens, perhaps we can devise treatments or therapies to prevent the disorder in the first place," he said.

Would that spell an end to abnormal behavior?

Hardly, answered Watson.

"New pathologies are always emerging.

Our environment constantly encourages people to get into trouble in new and different ways." Put another way, nobody is devoid of at least a few minor psychological quirks or emotional eccentricities.

Any person who is utterly and absolutely normal probably is not.

By Paul Elias THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SAN FRANCISCO — It's tragedy enough that Pat Williams' mother has Alzheimer's disease.

But Williams is also terrified because her chances of inheriting the disease are much better than average. So Williams eagerly enrolled her 90-year-old mother last year in a massive, 1,600- patient, 18-month clinical trial testing an experimental drug made by the biotechnology company Myriad The drug, called Flurizan, slowed the mind- robbing disease in some of the 128 patients with mild Alzheimer's participating in a smaller test.

Based on those results, the company has gambled millions of research dollars on the largest-ever Alzheimer's drug trial.

It aims to win an intense, international race among several biotech companies to find the first effective treatment to a...
