Before that, we were possessions, enumerated like cows and horses. No names. Just ages and gender, listed on slave schedules. Like many blacks, I knew the names of relatives born in the past century, but couldn't go back much further. As a race, our history hasn't been passed down, mainly because slaves weren't allowed to read and write, they weren't given last names and their families often were split up. A child sold away from his parents would know little about his heritage. It also can be a genealogical dead end when one encounters a child fathered by a white man. Just finding out the father's name can be difficult. Elders often weren't told the details or may not want to rehash them. Blacks and whites of earlier generations may have had children together but rarely lived in the same home, which means there is no census record linking mother and father. I know of three such shadowy unions between black women and white men that predate 1900 in my family tree - which explains in part why I have such a significant amount of European blood. I believe there are others, although I can't begin to trace them due to the paucity of pre-Civil War records for blacks. But I have a ... Number of county residents dwindles (genetics news)...

Number of county residents dwindles
Monroe has largest population decrease in 15 years
Greg Livadas Staff writer
(March 17, 2006) —
Monroe County experienced a greater single-year drop in population last year than it has seen in at least 15 years, according to census projections released this week. An estimated 733,366 people called Monroe County home as of July 1, 2005. That's a 0.3 percent decrease of about 2,450 people from the previous year. About 6,620 residents either died or moved from Monroe County in 2005. It was the second-largest decrease experienced by any upstate county. Only Erie County lost more people. "Unfortunately, it's the same old story. Employment levels have gone down and when that happens, you wonder where the people have gone and the worry is they'll go out of town," said Sarah Boyce, associate director of the Center for Governmental Research. "What these numbers show is that's probably the case." The decline was noted, but it didn't alarm Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks."While the estimated shift in Monroe County's population is less than one-half percent, we still need to take a close l... Bush names Eschenbach as FDA commissioner (genetics news)... Edward M. Kennedy, D-Ma., said he expected the administration to have to address the Plan B issue “fair and square” before von Eschenbach could be confirmed. House members, including Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-N.Y., have raised concerns about the safety of prescription drugs such as the painkiller Vioxx and allegations of a too-cozy relationship between the FDA and the pharmaceutical industry. Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, wrote Leavitt this week to stay that in the past few years “there has been an undeniable absence of strong leadership at the FDA.” The FDA oversees the regulation of medical devices and more than $1 trillion annually worth of food, drugs, cosmetics, animal feed and other products. They account for 25 cents of every dollar spent each year by people in the United States. John Seffrin, the national chief executive officer of the American Cancer Society, noted that von Eschenbach has seen cancer as a doctor and survivor. “You have an admixture of talent, experience and sensitivity that make him, I think, uniquely qualified to be a regulator at an agency as important as the Food and Drug Administration,” Seffrin said. On the cancer front, von Eschenbach has endured criticism of his stated goal of eliminating suffering and death due to the disease by 2015. “This is a case of misleading people,” said Dr.... genetics news page 1 | genetics news page 2 | genetics news page 3 | genetics news page 4 | genetics news page 5 | genetics news page 6 | genetics news page 7 | genetics news page 8 | genetics news page 9 | genetics news page 10 | genetics news page 11 | genetics news page 12 | genetics news page 13 | genetics news page 14 | genetics news page 15 | genetics news page 16 | genetics news page 17 | genetics news page 18 | genetics news page 19 | genetics news page 20 | genetics news page 21 | genetics news page 22 | genetics news page 23 | genetics news page 24 | genetics news page 25 | genetics news page 26 | genetics news page 27 | genetics news page 28 | genetics news page 29 | genetics news page 30 | genetics news page 31 | genetics news page 32 | genetics news page 33 | genetics news page 34 | genetics news page 35 | genetics news page 36 | genetics news page 37 | genetics news page 38 | genetics news page 39 | genetics news page 40 | genetics news page 41 | genetics news page 42 | genetics news page 43 | genetics news page 44 | genetics news page 45 | genetics news page 46 | genetics news page 47 | genetics news page 48 | genetics news page 49 | genetics news page 50 | genetics news page 51 | genetics news page 52 | genetics news page 53 | genetics news page 54 | genetics news page 55 | genetics news page 56 | genetics news page 57 | genetics news page 58 | genetics news page 59 | genetics news page 60 | genetics news page 61 | genetics news page 62 | genetics news page 63 | genetics news page 64 | genetics news page 65 | genetics news page 66 | genetics news page 67 | genetics news page 68 | genetics news page 69 | genetics news page 70 | genetics news page 71 | genetics news page 72 | genetics news page 73 | genetics news page 74 | genetics news page 75 | genetics news page 76 | genetics news page 77 | genetics news page 78 | genetics news page 79 | genetics news page 80 | genetics news page 81 | genetics news page 82 | genetics news page 83 | genetics news page 84 | genetics news page 85 | genetics news page 86 | genetics news page 87 | genetics news page 88 | genetics news page 89 | genetics news page 90 | genetics news page 91 | genetics news page 92 | genetics news page 93 | genetics news page 94 | genetics news page 95 | genetics news page 96 | genetics news page 97 | genetics news page 98 | genetics news page 99 | All genetics news Alcohol Abuse, Allergy, Anxiety, Arthritis, Bipolar Disorder, Breast Cancer, Depression, Diabetes, Erectile Dysfunction, Sexual Dysfunction, Women orgasm, Kidney Cancer, Liver Cancer, Lung Cancer, Menopause, Melanoma, Oral Cancer, Prostate Cancer, Sexual health, United states news, New York daily, Space industry
