U junior takes voyage to learning (genetics news)

...As a Semester at Sea student on the MV Explorer, Werth is experiencing a seagoing life and traveling to foreign countries with different languages, foods and lifestyles.

"I have gone on trips to the rain forest in Puerto Rico and, most recently, Iguassu Falls in Brazil," Werth said via e-mail, which she checks while in port.

"I try to eat some local food and to see what normal people see there, not just the tourist places." Also scheduled are stops in India, Myanmar (formerly known as Burma), Vietnam, Hong Kong, China and Japan.

Keeping in contact with Werth hasn't been an easy job for her mom, Jean Nitschke of Granton.

"You can send mail two weeks ahead of the day they're supposed to arrive in their port," Nitschke said.

"Semester at Sea program gives out a list saying when the kids arrive in port.

I can't just pick up the phone and talk with her about any little thing.

That's the only way I know what she's doing, is by checking her blog." School is important for Werth, who is taking a global studies class to learn about the countries she's visiting as well as listening to lectures from locals about their home.

"Currently, we have political activist and former Robben Island prisoner Dennis Brutus, who has spoken about corporate globalization," Werth said.

"A man from (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) is also on board releasing oceanography devices off of the ship." Her other classes are ornithology, modern Britain and drawing, taught...

Wisconsin marriage amendment aims to marginalize (genetics news)

...Who would choose such a life with so much built in prejudice and pain?

Demeaning, excessive.

The Wisconsin Catholic bishops hope that "individuals with a homosexual orientation will be treated with compassion and civility" by Wisconsin residents, and "repudiate words and deeds that demean" them.

What could be more demeaning or lacking in compassion than the proposed amendment to the state constitution?

The constitution already defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

What more needs to be said?

This effort to outlaw a legal status for unmarried individuals, whether homosexual or heterosexual, is another act of seeking to marginalize and alienate a whole group of people, in society and within the church.

For the bishops to urge Catholics to vote for the proposed amendment is an example of their interference in affairs of the state.

Let the bishops make the rules regarding marriage within the church, but not try to dictate the rules for civil unions.

If the bishops are concerned about the sanctity of marriage perhaps they should focus on adultery and divorce.

Statistics tell us 21 percent of Catholic marriages will end in divorce.

There are many reasons for failed marriages today, but the issue of homosexuality is rarely one of them.

And if citizens and the government are as concerned about the sanctity of marriage as they claim to be, perhaps there should be a constitutional amendment outlining regulations that must be met before a marriage...
