One easy way to reduce the affects of ARMD is to avoid UV light. A much less common but severe result of too much UV exposure is choroidal malignant melanoma. The choroid is the layer of the eye that supports the sensory retina. If you are diagnosed with a choroidal malignant melanoma, typically enucleation, or removal of the eye, is advised. There also is the worry that the cancer will spread to vital organs and result in death. You cannot see a malignant melanoma forming inside your eye like you possibly can on your skin, which is one reason you should insist on dilated eye examinations every two years if you are younger than 40 and every year if you are 40 or older. When it comes to protecting the eyes from UV light, the tint in your sunglasses is not the answer. That tint only blocks visible light rays, not UV light. In fact, if your sunglasses do not block UV light, the tint can actually damage the eye by letting extra UV light into a dilated pupil. So, make sure any sunglasses you buy are high quality and have UV 400 protection. Transition lenses, which darken in sunlight, typically have UV protection, as do most custom clip-on sun lenses for prescription eyewear. Calvin Johnson (above) and BSU Professor Greg Hampikian co-authored the book “Exit to Freedom.” Johnson spoke to criminal justice students Friday. Calvin Johnson is a free man He spent 16 years in prison for raping a woman; a crime he did not commit. On the day of his sentencing hearing in 1983 he said, “With God as my witness, I have been falsely accused of these crimes. I did not commit them. I’m an innocent man, and I just pray in the name of Jesus Christ that all this truth will be brought out. The truth will eventually be brought out.” He was sentenced to a life term. Johnson said spending 16 years in prison induced every emotion possible. “When you wake up every day starring at walls and bars it makes you feel that you’re just wasting away. There were times when I felt depressed, tense and angry. I dealt with a lot of inner turmoil because there wasn’t anyone to talk to. I was alone,” Johnson said. He had an opportunity to be paroled. All he had to do was sign an admission of guilt and rehabilitation. “I’d die in prison before I signed anything like that,” he said, “I’m innocent.” The truth even...
