Ironically, a person might merely be trying to cope and think that they're in control of their environment.In all fairness, possessions are central to one's identity, and we do form emotional attachments to them.

They are clearly related to memories, and these are very reassuring as we age.But hoarding can become a public health problem when one considers the threat of fires, as well as rat and insect infestation.Several of my friends have concerns about the "junk" that their parents have accumulated and know they'll ultimately be responsible for "dehoarding." One friend had a creative idea and gave her parents a visit from 1-800-GOT-JUNK, the world's largest junk-removal service, as a Christmas present.Henriette Kellum, a licensed clinical social worker, offers other intervention tips in her "Hoarding Behavior Training" handout: Try to be empathetic with the hoarder and involve them in problem-solving.

The first part of the taskforce report focuses on the incidence of Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) and its underlying causes.

It is in the second half of Reducing the Risk: A Strategic Approach that the taskforce proposes ways to reduce such deaths.A chapter is set aside to find ways to detect and assess those at high risk of SCD.It states that the majority of SCDs occur as a result of coronary heart disease (CHD) in people over the age of 50.

The main causes inlcude smoking, high cholesterol and obesity.It also states that evidence shows that primary prevention has contributed to the falling incidence of CHD deaths.

On secondary prevention, the taskforce proposes development of cardiac rehabilitation services and the development of the role of primary care.

It proposes direct access for GPs to diagnostics.It is recommended that the priority group for risk assessment should be first-degree relatives of those who have died of SCD under 40 years of age.

The report advises that these people should be informed about a sudden cardiac death by the physician who diagnoses and signs the death certificate or the coroner.
