Book documents couple’s hard fight against depression (genetics news)

...But the main trigger, Phil says, was his excruciating case of prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate, correctly diagnosed only much later), made worse by his decision to not medicate the pain so as not to mask symptoms.

“Because the pain did not let up and I was unable to sleep, I suffered from sleep deprivation, so then all my (brain) chemistry changed, and I went downhill,” Phil says.

His slow road to recovery involved a variety of medications, hospitalizations and, eventually, electroconvulsive therapy or ECT.

In the book, he gives a detailed account and explanation of ECT, formerly known as shock treatments, which helped bring him out of the darkness.

Phil initially resisted ECT, remembering the terrifying images of Jack Nicholson’s treatments in the 1975 movie “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” but eventually got to the point where he was willing to try anything.

Though much less “violent” than the procedure used to be, Phil says, “there are still some people on the side of the fence that it works, and others that it doesn’t.

It worked for me.” He did, however, have a lot of short-term memory loss, which he says eventually came back to him.

“When Phil came back from the hospital, he couldn’t drive, because he didn’t know where the supermarket was.

He...

They walk differently because their thighs are so massively developed so they tend to cycle everywhere."On training camps, when we go out for something to eat, when they walk past, everyone turns round."Dave has also worked with swimmers Todd Cooper and Craig Houston. He said: "Swimmers usually spend all their time in the pool, they get up at 5am and swim 6km and the same...

Potential New Drugs For Tuberculosis Found By Einstein Researchers (genetics news)

..."So we urgently need to develop new and more effective antituberculosis drugs." Isoniazid, today's first-line anti-TB drug, stops TB bacteria from forming mycolic acid, a key building block for their cell walls.

It does the job by targeting an enzyme called InhA.

Trying to improve upon isoniazid, the Einstein researchers synthesized more than a dozen chemical "decoys" for InhA to latch onto, to prevent the enzyme from catalyzing its normal cell-wall-building reaction.

Two of these decoy chemicals, 2-HA and 2-OA, proved much more potent than isoniazid at killing the bacteria-but not in the way the researchers expected.

"We were surprised to find that 2-HA and 2-OA were actually being metabolized in mycobacteria into two different drugs, each of which inhibits a different biochemical pathway," says Dr.

Catherine Vilchèze, a study co-author in Dr.

Jacobs' laboratory.

"The pathways that they block - fatty acid and mycolic acid synthesis and fatty acid degradation - are essential for bacterial survival, and this combined inhibition had a powerful effect against the microbes.

To our knowledge, this is the first example of an antibacterial compound that inhibits several pathways to achieve its effect." The Einstein researchers are now trying to improve on the potency of 2-HA and 2-OA by synthesizing analogues (chemically similar compounds) to them.

"We're hopeful that these new compounds will prove even more toxic to TB bacteria and could help usher in a new era of TB th...
